David is a Creative Director/Writer (also known for making great rice krispie treats). While working on his first graphic novel and animated series, he would like to share his short fiction, poetry and cartoons for free. That way, one day you'll buy his stuff because you’ll feel guilty if you don’t. David lives in New York City. If you'd like to contact him, his email address is david9 AT gmail DOT com.
In 1997, my college roommate and closest friend, Michael McQuade, recounted a story of seeing a homeless person sleeping on a NYC sidewalk. Directly above this person, showcased in a storefront window, was a bed that no one was sleeping on. I remember Michael explaining that it was as if he was seeing the dream bubble over this sleeping person's head. His sensitivity to what he saw left a huge impact on me. I dedicate this Alternate Tracks to the person sleeping on that sidewalk: I hope you now have a roof over your head, food on your table, and a bed to sleep in. And to Michael, one of the most talented artists (and caring human beings) I know. Thank you for your friendship, for inspiring me, and for allowing me to share a little of your light here.
ReplyDeleteFantastic, David. You really captured the moment. Tragically beautiful. Thanks for all the kind words, too. Love you, bro.
ReplyDeleteSo good to know there are sensitive people in this world. A simple act of kindness be it physical or just one's thought can and does move mountains. You do not have to face reality, create reality. I appreciate life so much, the good and the not so good. Hopefully, that person is now sleeping on his own bed. M
ReplyDeleteps the graphic is hauntingly dark and beautiful.
I really like this piece. The first thing that caught my eye was the street lamp. It shines bright on a sad almost inexcusable reality in our society. Artistically, the adjacent use of the red “sale” sign in relation to the yellow lamp further highlights the absurdity of this situation existing in our streets. This man sleeps on the ground while a vacant bed lay empty and on sale. The almost monochromatic colors of the man sleeping below the burst of colors on the unused bed screams to me, fix this situation! This piece flawlessly chronicles the background story and further, a common reality. Great work! I can’t wait for the next track.
ReplyDeleteThank you for your creative power and for sharing. Thank you for trusting us with your work. Amy
